Division 3: Claregalway (uncontested)
Division 4: Sligo TC beat Claregalway 4-0

Commiserations to the Galway Division 1 and Division 4 winners - Cortoon and Claregalway - who lost out in their respective finals. Congratulations to the Galway Division 4 and 5 winners - Cortoon and Loughrea - for coming through their finals in Division 5 and 6, and best of luck to all three teams including Claregalway in the All-Ireland's next month.

Galway League Finals - Results
Thursday, 15th April 2010, by Lyall Guiney
The Galway County Mixed League finals took place last Saturday in Galway Lawn Tennis Club. Twelve teams took part in the finals across the 6 divisions in the County leagues. The closest final was in Division 1, where Boyle took the championship against Cortoon in the 3rd set of the final game. This was an epic battle with newcomers to the Galway league Boyle just shading it over the strong Galway side. Claregalway were victorious in two finals by winning Division 2 and 3 with 4-1 wins over Oranmore and Loughrea respectively. However both matches could easily have gone all the way to the last game, as indeed they did during the matches throughout the season.
In Division 4, Cortoon proved too strong for an upcoming Galway Lawn side, winning on a scoreline of 4-1. Having won an All-Ireland last year, this Cortoon team will be hoping to repeat the feat in the coming weeks and going on this performance they should go very close. In the Division 5 final Loughrea beat Furbo 4-2 which featured some thrilling games of badminton. This Furbo team should learn from this experience and be hot favourites to win the title next year. Loughrea will no doubt be a major threat to the established Division 4 teams next season.
In Division 6, last year's beaten finalists Oughterard captured the title with a well deserved victory over a strong Loughrea side 4-2. This victory brought great cheers from their large following on the night and big things are expected from this young team in the coming years. Loughrea will be disappointed to lose the final but can take some heart from the way their badminton has developed throughout the year.
After all matches had completed, refreshments and hot food were served upstairs. Chairperson Sheila Noone thanked the committee, players and our hosts, GLTC, for making the day such a success after another season of growth for Galway badminton. The presentation of prizes followed, and each team captain said a few words thanking their opponents and supporters.
The results of the finals were:
Division 1 sponsored by Carrolls 4x4: Boyle beat Cortoon 4-3
Division 2 sponsored by Aran Sports: Claregalway beat Oranmore 4-1
Division 3 sponsored by PC Dock: Claregalway beat Loughrea 4-1
Division 4 sponsored by Egan Electrical: Cortoon beat GLTC 4-1
Division 5 sponsored by Lydons Furniture: Loughrea beat Furbo 4-2
Division 6 sponsored by Old Monastery: Oughterard beat Loughrea 4-2
Congratulations to all, and best of luck to the winners of Divisions 1 to 5 who will be competing in the Connacht League finals on Sunday 25th of April, in the Galway Lawn Tennis Club. Everyone welcome!
Badminton League Finals at GLTC
Thursday, 8th April 2010, by Lyall Guiney
Press release from Trevor Jennings, PRO.
The County Badminton Leagues Finals will be played next Saturday, April 10th, at 5pm in GLTC with interesting battles in all divisions.
Division 1: With a couple of games yet to be played this week it looks likely to be Cortoon and Boyle in this year’s showpiece final which is sponsored by Carroll’s 4x4 Market. The teams have met twice already this season with Cortoon edging past their opponents 4-3 on the first occasion but losing out 5-2 on the return match. This promises to be a very tight affair with Boyle going in as slight favorites.
Division 2: Oranmore A have justified their favourites tag by topping the league table but they are closely followed by Claregalway who finish the league just one point behind them. Both teams deserve their place in the final which this year is sponsored by Aran Sports after finishing well ahead of Oranmore B, Loughrea and Galway Lawn in the league table. Oranmore A have already beaten Claregalway twice this year but the last winning scoreline of 4-3 suggests this match could go right down to the final mixed pairings.
Division 3: This is a straight shoot out between the clubs of Loughrea and Claregalway. Having been losing finalists for the last 3 years at this division Claregalway will finally be hoping to get their hands on the PC Dock sponsored cup this year but Loughrea will have other ideas of their own.
Division 4: This division proved to have two strong contenders with GLTC and Cortoon battling it out for the county title sponsored by Egan Electrical. Both won their semi finals contests last weekend, Cortoon overcame Claregalway and GLTC beat Menlough so spirits will be high in both camps. Cortoon won the Division 5 title last season and also went on to win the All-Ireland at that level so their experience might just be enough to shade it on the night.
Division 5: In the West, Furbo topped the table and were followed into the playoffs by Maree who held the advantage over GLTC. In the East, Loughrea and Oranmore made the playoffs. Loughrea beat Maree and Furbo beat Oranmore in the semi-finals. So the Division 5 final is between the two top teams in each section of the division, Furbo vs Loughrea. This division is sponsored by Lydon’s Carpet and Bedding centre.
Division 6: Over the past three seasons there has been an upsurge in the numbers of new players registered with the Galway Badminton Association. As a result it has been necessary to set up a new grade at Division 6 level to help beginners into the world of Badminton. After its success last year another twelve teams took part in this league which is sponsored by the Old Monastery in Letterfrack. This year’s final will be between Oughterard and Loughrea having both overcame Clonberne and Letterfrack respectively in their Semi-Finals last Monday.

A quick note to say that the Division 6 Mens Singles final was played after the league semi-finals last Monday. Paul Gannon of Letterfrack beat Richard O'Halloran of Oughterard.

Galway County Team victorious in All-Ireland final
Tuesday, 30th March 2010, by Lyall Guiney
The Galway county badminton team had a famous win in the All Ireland Inter County Class 4 finals played at Kingfisher in NUIG last Sunday 28th March 2010.
Morning semi final vs Roscommon was a very tight affair with many games going to a Third set.
Damien Hehir got the team off to the ideal start in a high quality men's singles tie vs Roscommon's Polish native Marcin Paluch winning a thrilling 3 setter. However Helen Sheehan was pipped in another tense affair in ladies singles going down narrowly 21-19 in the 3rd set.
Galways first men's pairing of Colm Franks and Ross Creaven never got going and suffered their first inter county loss of the season so Galway trailed 2-1 at this point in the best of 9 match.
Galway also lost 2nd men's doubles when Stephen Keane and Damien Hehir lost in a match that like almost every other in this semi final went all the way to a third set.
However the Galway 2nd ladies of Orla Bishop and Susan Gilmore manged to win their game in another 3 setter to leave the score at 3-2.
First ladies of Helen Sheehan and Joanne Gilmore were involved in a titantic struggle with the Roscommon sister pairing of Audrey and Corina Delaney. This was a game Galway could not afford to lose as they would have been 4-2 down with Roscommon only needing 1 of the remaining 3 mixed to knock Galway out. The Galway pair somehow fought back and edged a thriller 21-18 in 3rd set to level the tie overall at 3-3.
Momentum was now fully with the Galway team after that epic ladies doubles win and 3rd mixed pairing of Bryan Lalor and Susan Gilmore continued their unbeaten intercounty record this season won in the straight sets to suddenly have Galway ahead at 4-3 for the first time having trailed Roscommon all morning long.
Suddenly it was Galway who needed only 1 of the 2 remaining mixed to reach the final.
The second mixed pairing of Ross Creaven and Claire Kenny won the first set and things were looking good.
The first mixed pairing of Cormac O'Connor and Joanne Gilmore after a poor opening set loss stormed back to win the second set 21-10.
However before they had a chance to start the 3rd set, Ross and Claire were on the verge of winning the second set and the match clinching point to reach the all Ireland. Despite some nervy moments Claire and Ross played brilliantly to squeeze the 2nd set 22-20 and Galway were through without having to play the 3rd set of 1st mixed.
So Galway had now reached the final.
Only a half hour break was allowed in between the semi final ending and the final vs Meath starting.
Meath had beaten Waterford in the second semi in an equally tense affair as the Galway semi on a scoreline of 5-4.
So only Meath stood in the way of Galway and a first title at this level since 2004.
The nerves of the morning seem to have disappeared and the Galway team played their best badminton of the year in the final. 2 quick singles wins by Damien Hehir and Helen Sheehan who was particularly impressive gave Galway a very quick 2-0 lead.
2nd ladies soon followed to give Galway a 3-0 lead. In one of the many contender for 'game of the day', the second men's pairing of Stephen Keane and Damien Hehir manged to win a thrilling final set despite being behind for almost the entire set coming back from 17-20 down to win 22-20 amid very happy scenes for the Galway contingent.
Now with a lead of 4-0 the title was within touching distance.
The first mens pairing of Colm Franks and Ross Creaven made up for their semi final loss playing aggressive attacking badminton and despite losing the second set pulled away to easily win the 3rd set and the All Ireland was Galways on a comprehensive scoreline of 5-1. Galway did lose first ladies but this game had become irrelevant once the magical figure of 5 had been reached.
Player manager Cormac O'Connor accepted the cup on behalf of his Galway team from Badminton Union of Ireland president Craig Casey.

County Team success !!
Tuesday, 16th February 2010, by Lyall Guiney
The Inter-County Class 4 qualifiers took place last Sunday in the University of Limerick. The Galway county team, under leadership of team manager Cormac O'Connor, performed superbly to come through as group winners in their section. Cormac emailed me the following summary of the tournament. The finals will take place in GLTC at the end of March... hoping for lots of home support for the team that weekend!
15 travelled
8 lads, Cormac O'Connor (Player Manager), Ross Creaven, Damien Hehir, Bryan Lalor, Colm Franks, Tom O'Neill, Guillaume Meunier, Stephen Keane.
7 ladies, Claire Kenny, Helen Sheehan, Aoife Mooney, Orla Bishop, Joanne Gilmore, Susan Gilmore, Mary Ann Larkin.
First game beat Kerry 8-1 which set us for the day, we won 3 tight 3 setters in this match which proved the difference.
Next up we played limerick and won 7-2.
With one foot in the semis we then took on Tipperary and also won 7-2.
We had now qualified but the last game vs Meath was still important as we needed at least four games vs Meath to win the section. Some more tight matches went Galway's way once again and we managed to lead Meath 5-1 with two mixed games not played. These games became irrelevant as Galway had qualified as group winners and Meath as group runners up.
Waterford won the other section with Roscommon runners up.
As group winners Galway progress to All Ireland semis vs Roscommon on Sat 27th March in GLTC with Waterford taking on Meath in the other semi.
Highlights of the day were Damien Hehir playing 8 matches and winning 7. Ross Creaven and Colm Franks winning 4 out of 4 at first mens doubles. Cormac O'Connor and Joanne Gilmore at 1st Mixed and Bryan Lalor and Susan Gilmore at 3rd mixed both being unbeaten all day. But most of all it was a squad effort and of the 15 that travelled, 14 played over the day and the large squad and team spirit was crucial throughout the day.
Roll on the 27th of March.

Connacht Championships - Great showcase for Galway badminton
Monday, 1st February 2010, by Lyall Guiney
The Galway County Board hosted a superb day of badminton in GLTC last Saturday. With 44 of Connacht's finest players taking part, the Grade A Connacht Closed Championships went off without a hitch. Somewhere around 80 matches were played over the course of more than 10 hours. Congratulations to all who took part, and especially the winners who all had to overcome some formidable opposition. A quick thanks also to our County Championship's sponsor, FC's Catering (see Sponsors page), who provided soup and sandwiches for sale at GLTC reception, and to the receptions who throughout the day made sure that all players and organisers were looked after.
A full list of winners, photos and all match scores and results can be found on the Connacht website - click here.

Sunday, 13th December 2009, by Lyall Guiney
Reminder: Please do your utmost to get ONE THIRD of your league fixtures played before Christmas. Also please send in your results sheets to league secretary Anita Horgan ASAP after the game is completed. BOTH teams should do this for all fixtures. In addition, your club rep has access to the website to enter league results - if you are a team captain, please annoy your club rep to get the login details, so that you can do it yourself! If you are "just a player" on the team, then annoy your team captain or club rep until they do it. :-)
There is a busy badminton term coming up from January through to April, with the County Mixed and Singles Championships, the Connacht Championships and various other tournaments taking place. Remember that the deadline for league games is Friday 2nd April so there really is no time to lose.
Thank you and have a great time over the holidays!

Several Irish players are in with a good chance of making the weekend finals, including Scott Evans and Chloe and Sam Mcgee.

She also thanked the host venue GLTC and administrator Sarah Caulfield for helping with the organisation of the various nights.
